Chanukah tradition was quite cool. Every night the family gathered together (and asked me to join) and lit the candles on the windowsill, one more each night. I got to light them, too, one night even all the candles of one candelabra! ^0^ Every night they sang the same song which even I almost learnt (not the lyrics obviously xP). Then they wished happy Chanukah and gave presents. On Tuesday and Thursday nights I got presents, too! On Tuesday this lovely warm, forest green sherpa throw (under which I'm lying right now, I don't know how I survived without this) and then on Thursday a nail polish set. I was astounded. They had told they get the au pair a present, too, but that TWO. Daisy and Jacob were immediately telling me with which colour I should varnish my nails :D Jacob would've liked to have the sherpa for himself and he said he loves to do nails, so he would've liked the polishes as well. Anthony said that that's something you don't even joke about. I was sad (for several reasons). I would've liked to have a nail studio with Jacob! We also had a Chanukah party combined with Claire and Anthony's anniversary party, veggie hot dogs, nachos and doughnuts, latter of which are essential to Chanukah. A lot of folks and children and a buffet. I was forced to wash the sticky floors the next day xP But it was still fun :)
Lahja lahjaan käärittynä // A present wrapped in a present
Viimesen kokonaisen viikon saldo:
6) Yksityisravintolat.

The achievements of the last whole week:
1) A confusing illness (of which, more confusingly, all relatives and friends seemed to be aware of). On Monday I was alone with the kids, since Claire and Anthony were having an anniversary lunch which lasted till the evening. I somehow had a funny feeling from the afternoon on, I tried to lie on the couch and have a snack after picking up the kids from school, because I thought it was lack of energy. I then prepared supper, when suddenly I simply had to lie down and lift my feet up. Then I went to the loo and threw up. I instantly felt better and was able to give supper to them. The parents still bathed them and I went to bed really early. In the morning I just had a thumping in my head, otherwise I felt pretty normal. I gave Jacob breakfast and then my vision blurred and I had to sit down. I was able to make my own brekkie and having eaten it, I was told to go upstairs to rest by Anthony. I rested for the whole day, even though for the most part I felt like nothing had ever happened. Weird.
2) Ethan's Christmas party lunch. I made tuna sandwiches in the morning and took them to the school and helped the other mums (even though I'm not a mum) set up a table for the children. They had lunch in the hall, sandwiches, crisps, fruit, chocolate, Christmas crackers and little nice things. The going was very unorganised. At first we had too few sandwiches, there weren't enough juice boxes for all the kids, but the sugary things were plenty. I don't get how hard it would've been to agree that you'll make this number of sandwiches and you'll bring this number of juice boxes, so that there's no need to contemplate nicking from the other tables. Well, the kids arrived in their paper crowns and sat down. I obviously hung out with Ethan until Claire got back from her MRI, but it was adorable to realise the other children asked for my help, too, even though there were mums around. Or I guess to them I was as much of a mum as anybody else. A rather sweet tradition.
3) Last supper in Gail's on Thursday with Sophie and Flora. It was the day of Sophie's departure. It felt so weird to part, even though of course we'll see next year. There was a combination of the kind of melancholy of not seeing these people and of the kind of disbelief that I'm on my way home soon, too. Gail's is super expensive but also super delicious. A perfect last "coffee".
4) A Friday without breaks. After a long time we had a proper Shabbat's dinner, guests and everything, so of course I had a lot to do. Besides having a shower and lunch I didn't really have a break apart from a couple of small breathers, but all the time I just thought about the lovely dinner I would eat later. And when the kids had been picked up from school, I did have a moment of peace before the guests arrived. Amazing to end the week with a real Shabbat feast! And then we went to a pub with Lilly but stayed there only for an hour and left home at half past ten, because we were both so tired xD2) Ethan's Christmas party lunch. 5) THE BEST MUSICAL EVER!!! We went to see Kinky Boots with Mari on Saturday and it was an excellent choice for the last musical before Christmas! Or for whenever, in fact. I wanted to dance and sing along, I cried, laughed, first and foremost laughed. The actors were marvellous and the music superb! And on top of that there was a perfect role for me *^0^* I found an audition song ;) It may be silly here in the promised city of theatre to want to go to the same show again, but mum promised to pay for theatre tickets when they come for a visit and I think I know what we're going to go see...
6) Private restaurants. Before the theatre we had Indian food for lunch and were the only people in the restaurant. It was partly a bad thing also, because the waiter was quite eager to talk to us but we just wanted to talk to each other... And on Sunday we had dinner in a small café restaurant with Flora and that was otherwise empty, too. And more of that in a bit.
7) Goodbye to Lilly. On Sunday we had coffee in Kentish Town with Flora and Lilly and that was the last time when we saw Lilly. Or she will come visit in March because her mates had already booked tickets to come visit her, so she joins them "to visit herself" xD She will now stay in Austria because she needs to study for exams and she would've had to leave in February anyway. We hugged for a long while and waved as long as we saw her disappear in the stairs of the underground. If saying goodbye to the people I know I'm still gonna see felt strange, then that definitely left me feeling empty. But I really do hope we'll stay in touch with Lilly in the future, such a cool girl! And there's always a place to crash if I decide to go to Austria ;)
8) Stealing. When we had parted ways with Lilly, we didn't want to have supper yet, so we decided to return to Camden Market to see if there were doughnuts for sale for a cheap price. The salesman shouted that you could have three for a pound. Of course we decided to make the most of the offer! I didn't have ten pence, so we paid £1,10 and didn't get change (he probably didn't assume anybody would pay something else than an exact pound). We picked the doughnuts and suddenly Flora wondered if we should take a fourth one. I was immediately on board. "He won't notice anything and these'll go in the bin in any case." Flora started to hesitate a little but we did slip an extra one in the bag and skittered from the scene with excitement. Neither of us has ever done anything wrong so that was quite extreme. We're pretty tough xD But we didn't even steal. We just bought three doughnuts for one pound and one for ten pence :P
9) Discounts. So we had dinner in a place called Arancini Brothers which speacialises in risotto balls. Yes. Both of us had veggie burgers (the patty in all the options was a mushroom courgette risotto patty, in addition you could have bacon or lamb) with blue cheese and out of interest we ordered a dish of the risotto balls. We went to the till and had some problems with the bill. The young bloke behind the counter said he can't split the bill but for some reason it worked after all. Flora asked if that was the price for eating in. "No, I charged for take out, no worries. And there's a 20 pence discount as well." We were really surprised and said we'd most certainly come back there! He thanked us. And we didn't even lie. The burgers were really yummy and the risotto balls were perfect in their quirkiness. Flora said they might have been the best thing she's eaten here. And those plus a drink only £7,90! We wondered if he wanted our numbers or if it was just a strategy to make costumers return. Whatever it was, it worked! We tipped and left happy to munch on our nicked doughnuts. We parted in very sappy circumstances, hugged for a long time and said that it's silly behaviour since we'll see each other in a couple of weeks, even though it is the next year. I'm really glad that in such a short time I've got this close to people ^^
10) Karma strikes back. We constantly waited for something bad to happen after our doughnut case, because karma's a bitch, but no. It only felt like super good experiences crossed our path. Well, Flora told me she almost missed her flight, had to leave a chocolate spread at the airport because it was "liquid" and one of her Christmas presents broke. I had a really nice day instead, I taught Daisy how to knit, helped her pack for Israel and she helped me fold the washing. In the evening we had a small birthday party for her, a few guests, cake and presents. She probably liked the card I drew more than the present but hopefully after reading it she'll feel differently :D The Chronicles of Spiderwick, that is. I cleared up and put dishes back in the cupboard. I lifted a pile of plates and sure enough somehow my hand grazed Ethan's Chanukah present, an R2-D2 egg cup, the top of which fell and shattered. Karma... And what an ending to the year. Claire was already stressed out about leaving to Israel and the suitcases, so I was not eager to tell about my mess-up. However, she just chuckled and said she'd wondered when that would break. Said I could try and fix it but if it won't work, I needn't worry. Anthony was clearly more upset. I heard Claire say, "She will stick it back together. She WILL." The tone was very firm and I felt like going to hug her again when she stood up for me like that. Even though I can't perform miracles. I already tried to glue it together but it didn't work. I can buy a new one if it's that big of a deal.
Today I was bowling with the boys, it was really fun! And tomorrow I'll go home <3<3<3 So this is the last update this year. Merry Christmas and a happy New Year and those who I'll see soon - see you soon! ;D
